Christ the Light Church (CTL) is an independent church planted in York by a team of people led by Charles and Cath Walters, who were sent out from NCF Church, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Its first meeting was on 16th September 2007, and the church has grown, by the grace of God, to be an all-age congregation united by a desire to worship and serve Jesus.
Although not part of a denomination, CTL relates to a group of churches under the guidance of the New Covenant Ministries International (NCMI) team. This means that whilst it is independent, CTL works together with other churches in its aim to advance the Kingdom of God here on earth.
CTL is led by a team of elders. On 23rd October 2012, Ed and Heidi Strong, from NCMI’s translocal team ordained Charles & Cath Walters, Nick & Kate Watson, and Colin & Jayne Booth as the church’s first eldership team.
CTL is an active, vibrant, growing congregation who welcome new members joyfully. Our worship is passionate and our Bible-centred teaching is accessible to all. We are not just a Sunday-morning church, either. We believe in church being a family, and so we have home-groups and other happenings during the week that allow us to build relationships with each other. Children are also vitally important to us, and our children’s ministry is growing rapidly.
CTL is fuelled by the desire to reach people for Jesus Christ. Its ‘motto’, as it were, is “Bringing all people together to life in Jesus Christ”. We welcome all people, from all walks of life, into our church family, through our Sunday meetings and through the meetings that happen during the week, too. We joyfully participate together in building Jesus’ Kingdom on earth.
We have a regular Sunday service, which starts at 10:30am, with our children’s ministries running alongside the main service. During the week, we have Connect (home) groups that meet in homes on alternate Monday lunchtimes, and weekly on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. There is a youth group that meets weekly on Wednesday and Friday evenings, during term time.
Our Sunday services take place at the Joseph Rowntree Secondary School on Haxby Road in New Earswick, but our midweek events take place at various locations across the north of York.
